On March 5th, the winners of the Bite the Ballot competition were invited for the opening of their exhibition in the European Parliament. The exhibition shows several perspectives on what it means to be an European citizen in 2014. My entry ‘Deconstruction of the EU flag’ was selected as the people’s choice. The flag is an invitation to use your imaginative power as a European citizen. Unfortunately the Ukranian artist that is one of the winners, could not attend the ceremony, due to the situation in her country.

The people’s choice.
In my attempt to define what it means to be European, I realize that European identity unfortunately is not yet a strong cultural state of mind, carried out by many European citizens. There’s a contrast between the EU generating a single European identity and the dynamic character of European cultures because Europe is a mosaic of cultures and identities. Therefore I believe as a European citizen in 2014 that we need new European symbols that we can identify with. They need to be developed by European citizens themselves, from the bottom-up.
